Nicholls Hires Ricky Brumfield as Special Teams Coordinator

THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University football program announced the hiring of Ricky Brumfield as its special teams coordinator/safeties coach. Brumfield previously served as special teams coordinator for seven seasons at NCAA Division II Fairmont State University.

“We are very excited to have Ricky Brumfield join our staff”, said Nicholls head football coach Charlie Stubbs. “Not only does he bring a wealth of experience in the area of special teams, but he also fits everything we're looking for in a coach because he values academics and looks at the total student-athlete. And being a native of New Orleans, I believe his knowledge of the area will further strengthen our philosophy of recruiting in-state.”

Brumfield, 34, spent the last seven years at Fairmont State which included the last two seasons as Assistant Head Coach. In 2010, the Fighting Falcons ranked No. 1 in their conference in overall special teams as his squad blocked five kicks, caused two turnovers and scored two touchdowns on the year. He also served as wide receivers coach at FSU where his top receiver, Perry Baker, was one of the few non-Division I players to be selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game.

“I'm very excited to be here and I want to thank Coach Stubbs for selecting me to be a part of his staff,” said Brumfield. “I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with these kids and the program, and to have a winning tradition. First and foremost, I want to come in and win a conference championship.”

During his tenure at FSU, Brumfield spent five summers assisting with various NFL teams. From 2007-09, he worked with the Pittsburg Steelers, tutoring wide receivers as well as contributing his efforts to special teams.

Brumfield earned his bachelor's from Utah State University where he lettered four years as a wide receiver. While at Utah State, the Aggies were two-time Big West Conference Champions and earned a birth to the Humanitarian Bowl in 1997.

Brumfield started his coaching career at Union College in 2001, serving as special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach. At Union, he earned his master's in 2003 before joining the coaching staff at Fairmont State.

A native of New Orleans, La., Brumfield attended Archbishop Shaw where he was named All-District and All-Westbank as a wide receiver. He and his wife, Erin, have four children; Kyan, McKel, Tacy, and Asher.

“I'm also glad to be home,” added Brumfield. “I'm excited about my parents being able to see me coach. All and all, I'm just excited to be a part of this program and a part of this staff.”
