THIBODAUX – With spring practices set to start next week, the Nicholls State University football program took a break from its preseason activities to hit the hardwood on Saturday as the Colonels hosted the Inaugural Nicholls Football All-Star Basketball Classic at Stopher Gym.
The event consisted of a 3-on-3 tournament as well as 3-point, free throw and slam dunk contests. Running back
Marcus Washington took the crown as slam dunk champion, with linebacker
Rashar Knight and quarterback
Hayden Cardiff finishing second. In the 3-point contest, last year's quarterbacks were well represented as
Beaux Hebert placed first, followed by LaQuinton Caston and
Landry Klann. Along with the players, the coaching staff participated in all the competitions as well.
“It was a great time to do something different, to see the players and coaches in a different light. We had a lot of friends and family who came to watch us play and we all had a lot of fun,” said Nicholls football head coach Charlie Stubbs. “Our motto for this season is 'Band of Brothers' and we are trying to promote that, because just like in life, if you care about somebody, then you'll fight harder and not give up. We thought this would be a great way to develop more team unity.”
After the classic, a crawfish boil was held at John L. Guidry Stadium, with over 500 lbs of crawfish.
“We appreciate all the efforts from the families and supporters of the program that helped make it a great event,” said Coach Stubbs.
