THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University football team fought off the elements on Saturday to complete its annual spring scrimmage at John L. Guidry Stadium.
Despite the rain, several fans showed up to see the 2012 Colonels' first and only live-action scrimmage of the spring.
“I was very impressed with the crowd that we had for the scrimmage,” said Nicholls football head coach Charlie Stubbs. “Even though it rained throughout, I'd say it was one of the best attended scrimmages we've had since I've been here.”
Due to injuries and depth at certain positions, Coach Stubbs kept the controlled format, which he has used in the two previous springs. Along with 7-on-7 passing drills, the Colonels completed live action plays in different scenarios, such as first down, third down and red zone situations.
“I'm excited that we were able to have a productive day, despite the weather,” said Coach Stubbs. “I thought we had a clean performance, very few penalties and turnovers. Our players were really flying around and playing good, aggressive, hard-nose football. We had some great plays made on both sides of the ball, so as a head coach, that's something you like to see.”
“I also thought our special teams played well. All of our punts were fielded cleanly and our kickers had some nice field goals. I know that we have a lot of work to do, but overall I was pleased with our performance.”
Before the scrimmage, Nicholls hosted potential prospects at its annual Junior Day, held at Peltier Hall.
“Our Junior Day went great and was very well attended,” said Coach Stubbs. “It not only benefits them, but it is very productive for us as well. Recruiting is the life blood of any program, so we are always looking to improve in that area.”
The Colonels wrapped up the spring season with their 15th and final practice on Tuesday.
