Coach Stubbs and the Colonels will have their final scrimmage on Saturday
Colonels Complete Final Two-A-Day; Scrimmage Set for Saturday
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football team wrapped its final two-a-day on Thursday, going for over an hour in helmets under the lights at John L. Guidry Stadium.
With heat and humidity reaching dangerous levels in the morning practices, head coach Charlie Stubbs decided to scrap the full pads in a.m. session, opting to practice in just shells.
“It's been tremendously hot for two-a-days,” Coach Stubbs said. “I knew it would be, this is my third year in South Louisiana, but for some reason this camp, the mixture of humidity and everything has kind of took its toll this year. But the guys worked through it and we were able to adjust practice very well.”
In the night cap, after going through various drills, the Colonels worked on clock-management situations, including rushing the field goal unit onto the gridiron as time expired.
“Overall, it's been a very productive day,” said Coach Stubbs. “Unfortunately, we had a few injuries, but hopefully we'll be able to overcome them.”
After Friday's practice in full pads, the Colonels will have their last scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning. Last weekend, the weather forced the Colonels' scrimmage to end ahead of schedule, so with the opener at Oregon State just 14 days away from Saturday, Nicholls will focus on execution in its final scrimmage as they'll begin to game plan next week for the Beavers.
“We'll start working with certain young men who are further along for our game plan,” Coach Stubbs said. “Oregon State is a very good team, so I'd like to be able to go over the game plan twice before we play them. It'd allow our newcomers to have everything tied down, so after Saturday, it's pretty much just preparation for the Beavers.”
The team will warm up at 8:30 a.m., with the controlled scrimmage set to begin at 9. The Colonels will work on 1st and 10 plays, third down situations and red zone scenarios.
The Colonel opener on Sept.1 in Corvallis is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff time, with live coverage on the Pac-12 Network. The 2012 home debut is set for Sept. 22 against Evangel. For season or individual tickets, visit NichollsTickets.com or call the ticket office at 985-448-4790.
