Maloo Earns Title as Colonels Wrap up Big Easy Classic


NEW ORLEANS – Nicholls State University tennis had three players reach championship matches in the final day of the Big Easy Classic, with Parija Maloo capturing a title for the women's team.

Overall, the women took third in the standings, claiming 24 points on the weekend. Maloo, who was the top-seed in 'Flight 1', outlasted Southern Illinois' Melanie Delsart in three sets, picking up 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-4 victory to win the title. Marie Aubert made the final match in 'Flight 2', but came up short, falling 6-4, 7-6 (4) against Troy's Candela Munoz-Giron.

The men earned 41 points for the classic, placing second behind host UNO. Siddarth Sivakumar faced Privateer Rui Silva in the 'Flight 3' championship, dropping the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

In the men's consolation rounds, Jamie Eccleton fell in the 'Flight 2' championship against UNO's Hossam Meligy 6-4, 6-4. In doubles play, Evan Karatzas/ Nico Mertens picked up an 8-3 win against South Alabama and won in the championship by walkover.

The men will resume play at the Lamar Invitational, starting on Oct. 5, and the women will take part in the West Florida Invitational on Oct. 20.
