THIBODAUX, La. - Junior
Michael Henry became the third player in Nicholls State University football program history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season but No. 10 Southeastern Louisiana had no trouble in putting away the Colonels as Nicholls was defeated 62-3 Thursday night at John L. Guidry Stadium.
The loss kept the Colonels winless on the year, dropping their record to 0-12 overall and 0-8 in conference. The Colonels losing streak, dating back to last season, now stands at 18 games.
With the win, Southeastern keeps the River Bell with its fourth consecutive victory over the Colonels and evens the all-time series to 12-all. The Lions (9-3, 7-1 SLC) also claimed at least a share of the Southland Conference title for the second straight season.
Henry entered the game with 887 yards rushing and was able to account for 118 yards on 27 carries, giving the Baton Rouge native 1,005 yards for the season. Henry joins teammate
Tuskani Figaro, who redshirted this season, and Nakia Lumar as the only Colonels to reach the milestone. Figaro set the rushing record last season with 1,103 yards while Lumar rushed for 1,072 in 1996.
Like last week, the Colonels scored first, but the team could only muster a field goal, getting a 40-yarder from
Francisco Condado. Southeastern answered with a 77-yard touchdown pass, but would only lead 7-3 after the first quarter. The rest of the way, it was all Lions. SLU pumped out 20 points in the second quarter, 21 in the third and two touchdowns in the fourth to finish the night with 62 unanswered points.
Despite Henry's night, Nicholls was held to 279 yards on offense, while Southeastern finished with 633. Senior
Kalen Henderson made the start at quarterback for the Colonels, throwing for 57 yards and two interceptions on 8 of 16 passing. Senior
Beaux Hebert played in the second half, passing for 100 yards on 4 of 12. Fellow senior
Demon Bolt led the receivers with 80 yards on three catches.
For the Lions, quarterback Bryan Bennett saw limited action, completing 2 of 8 passes for 81 yards with 77 coming off the SLU's first touchdown. Jordan Barnett threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns while Devante Scott caught seven balls for 196 yards. The Lions racked up 313 yards on the ground, led by 119 from Marquis Hayes.
After the first quarter, Southeastern ran back an interception to the Nicholls 5-yard line. The defense stuffed the Lions at the 1 on third down and SLU went for it on fourth, but quarterback D'shaie Landor slipped on a QB sneak for a loss, giving Nicholls the ball. But things started to look bleak from then on when on third-and-long from the Colonel 3, Henderson was sacked in the end zone for a safety by Justin Church for a 9-3 SLU lead.
For the rest of the second, Southeastern added two rushing touchdowns and Henderson's second interception led to a Lion field goal, putting the Lions up 27-3 at the break.
In the third, Southeastern blew the game open with three more touchdowns. Blaine Arnold caught a 10-yard score in the first drive, Landor rushed in for a 9-yard TD five minutes later and Barnett connected with Jarrell Bennett for a 32-yard score with 2:38 remaining. Nicholls had an opportunity to score after a 29-yard catch by Bolt and a 34-yard rush by Henry put Nicholls inside the Lion 10, but the secondary batted away a fourth-down pass by Hebert to keep Nicholls out of the end zone.
On the Colonels' next drive, Bolt came through with a 45-yard catch, but Nicholls turned the ball over on downs in the red zone once again. Leading 48-3 in the fourth, the Lions ended the scoring with an 88-yard TD run by Hayes and a 3-yard touchdown run by Harrell.
Senior
Davin Bovie led the Colonel defense with seven tackles, giving him 108 for the season, which is the most since Lee Rogers had 114 in 2000.
Nicholls will lose 24 seniors, who were honored before the game. The program will hold a
press conference on Friday in regard to its coaching search.
