THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University Athletics officially announced its 2015 Hall of Fame Class on Friday which includes Bobby Dickerson (baseball, 1984-87), Kat Harrell Slosarek (softball, 2005-08), Katherine Plummer (women's basketball, 2005-08) and Oscar Smith (football, 1981-85). The four-member class will be enshrined on Saturday, Oct. 17 before the Colonel football game against Houston Baptist.
"Every year we receive several nominations for our hall of fame, and every year it seems to become more difficult to select only a handful out of the many deserving former Colonel athletes," said
Rob Bernardi, Nicholls Director of Athletics. "I believe this 2015 class is as good as any class our committee has put together. As always, we are truly grateful for everyone who took the time to send in nominations."
A native of LaPlace, Dickerson played for the Colonel baseball team from 1984-87. During his tenure with the Red and Gray, the Colonels posted 39- and 38-win campaigns, two first-place finishes in the conference and were .500 or better in all four seasons. As a freshman, Dickerson led the team with a .366 batting average and was named All-Trans America. In 1985, he garnered Second Team All-Gulf Star honors after leading Nicholls in RBIs (46), doubles (17) and home runs (7). On the base paths, Dickerson led the nation in stolen base percentage by stealing 39 bases on 39 attempts. After earning first-team All-Gulf Star as a junior, Dickerson once again had team-highs in home runs (9) and stolen bases (38) in his final season.
Even after nearly 30 years since he last played at Nicholls, Dickerson still ranks in the top three of an astonishing 11 categories on the Colonels' all-time career lists. Of the 11, he ranks first in total bases (3,924), at-bats (761) and games played (228); second in home runs (28), doubles (57), hits (243) and stolen bases (132); and third in RBIs (154).
Drafted in the 23rd round of the 1987 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees, Dickerson went on to have a successful career in the professional ranks as a coach and manager. He currently serves as the third base coach for the Baltimore Orioles.
Harrell, a native of League City, Texas, played for the Colonel softball team from 2005-08 and left as one of the most decorated players in program history. Along with leading the Colonels in batting average in each of her four seasons, Harrell took the Southland Conference batting crown three times and was named SLC Hitter of the Year as a sophomore with a .382 average. In '06 and '08, Harrell led the Southland in hits, runs scored and triples. She was named First Team All-Southland in her sophomore, junior and seniors seasons to become the only Colonel in program history to earn first-team honors three times. The three nods put Harrell in an exclusive club as only 23 players have earned first-team accolades three or more times in their careers in the Southland's 32-year history.
A member of the Southland Conference 50th Anniversary All-Time Softball Team, Harrell helped lead Nicholls to three consecutive trips to the Southland Conference Tournament. In her senior season, the Colonels made an appearance in the title game as she was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Harrell, a three-time All-Louisiana honoree, ranks in the top 10 in nine categories on the Colonels' all-time career lists and holds the first (.453, '07), sixth (.395, '08) and 11th (.382, '06) spots on the single-season batting list. For the career lists, Harrell is the Nicholls all-time leader in hits (248), batting average (.374), doubles (44) and total bases (391). She also ranks second in slugging percentage (.586), third in runs (142), fourth in home runs (23), fifth in triples (15) and sixth in RBIs (92).
Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Plummer lettered four years for the Colonel women's basketball team, playing from 2005-08. She immediately made an impact as she was named All-Southland honorable mention as a freshman. After averaging double figures in scoring in her sophomore and juniors seasons, Plummer led the Southland in scoring at 18.9 points per game, which landed her on Second Team All-Southland. Her 510 points was a single-season record for the Colonel program until it was surpassed by
Emani White in the 2013-14 season.
On the all-time rankings, Plummer is fourth in scoring with 1,316 points - averaging 12.9 points per game – and has the most made free throws with 340. She also sits in third place in assists (387 / 3.8) and steals (237 / 2.3), while ranking 12th in free throw percentage (.728). In addition to her career marks, Plummer's 86 steals in the 2007-08 season is a Colonel single-season record and her 16 assists against Sam Houston in '07 matched the single-game record.
Smith, a native of Tampa, Fla., played four seasons for the Colonel football team from 1981-82 and '84-85, leading the team in rushing in each season. For his career, Smith racked up 2,482 yards rushing, which ranks second on the program's all-time rushing list. After rushing for 580, 405 and 550 yards in his first three campaigns, Smith put together his best season in 1985 as he rushed for 947 yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
Along with his success in carrying the ball, Smith excelled in finding the end zone. In the program's 40-plus years, no player has scored more touchdowns than Smith, who accounted for 35 in his career. In addition to holding the top spot on the Colonels' all-time scoring list with 210 points, Smith is one of only three players in team history to score four touchdowns in a single game. He is also one of four players to rush for double digit touchdowns in a single season, and he's the only player in Nicholls history to accomplish it twice (1982 – 10, 1985 – 11).
In 1984, Smith was named AP All-American honorable mention and First Team All-Gulf Star as Nicholls won the Gulf Star Conference championship. He was also honored in his senior season by both the Gulf Star Conference and LSWA, earning second-team accolades from each organization.
The Nicholls Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony will take place in the Harold J. Callais Recreational Center at 1 p.m. and the 2015 class will also be recognized during half time of the football game between the Colonels and Houston Baptist.
