Colonel Tennis adds three to signing class

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's and men's tennis programs added three student-athletes to its signing class, head coach Greg Harkins announced Wednesday at the 2nd Annual Spring Signing Day event held at the Harold J. Callais Memorial Recreation Center.

The women's team signed Daphne Haverkamp.  A native of the Netherlands, Haverkamp was rated as high as No. 95 in the Dutch rankings. She rounds out a recruiting class that includes Antonia Roessli, who signed in the early period and is currently No. 49 in German 18u rankings.

"Daphne has good size, coming in at 5-foot-9 and builds her game around a powerful forehand. With her size, she has solid agility and movement," Coach Harkins said. "Her background and ranking will add nice depth to the team that is showing growth and balance, keeping us competitive from the top to bottom of the lineup. She is intense and driven but a lot of fun to be around. She will work hard and be able to laugh along the way."

"I cannot wait to compete for Nicholls State University," Haverkamp said. "College tennis is a dream for many people and to make this a reality as a Colonel is truly amazing."

The men's squad added two student-athletes – Mortiz Borges from Germany and Arthur Toledo from Brazil. Borges holds a No. 80 ranking in 18u junior rankings and is No. 453 in the Men's Open rankings.

"At 6-foot-3, Mortiz brings a big serve game to the court and plays an aggressive game. His size and power will make an impact in the Southland Conference," Harkins said. "We see him coming into the lineup and adding depth in both singles and doubles. He is focused and has ambitions to exceed not only on the court but academically too."

Toledo has had a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) as high as 12.4, which would put him in the top third of the players in the Southland Conference.

"Arthur is a grinding player who wears his opponents down with mental and physical toughness. I can't wait to see Arthur in Colonel colors, his energy and intensity will be exciting to watch, and he will fit well within the team," Harkins said. "Southland play is physically punishing, and Arthur reminds me of a version of ATP top professional David Ferrer - he is going to be a tough out."

"I am happy and excited to be part of the Nicholls family," Toledo said. "I will give my best to help the team achieve the highest results possible. I am easy-going but motivated and looking forward to starting my new life as a Colonel."
