FRISCO, Texas - Nicholls State University men's basketball senior
Latrell Jones has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
A native of New Orleans, Jones averaged 18.0 points on 51.4 percent from the field and was 7 of 15 from 3-point range to lead the Colonels to a pair of victories last week.
Jones started the stretch with a near double-double in the win over Jarvis Christian, tallying 19 points and nine rebounds in the Colonels' first victory of the season. He followed up with a monster game in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic finale, pouring in a career-high 26 points in the 72-70 victory over San Diego. The 6-foot-5 guard connected on 8 of 15 from the field, 4 of 8 from behind the arc, and grabbed six rebounds. He also chipped in with a pair of free throws to give Nicholls the lead with a minute remaining.
The honor is the first for Jones and the first for the Colonels this season. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. A student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots to earn an honorable mention.
