Although the Nicholls State Colonels volleyball team was able to keep pace with Sam Houston State early in sets, the Bearkats rode the back of senior Cynthia Yartosky to the tune of a three set (30-21, 30-21, 30-28) victory.
The Bearkats (11-11, 5-4), would struggle to keep the Colonels (8-17, 2-7) from attempting to make a comeback in the middle of sets before turning on the jets and overtaking Nicholls in the last few points of each match.
Aaliyah Muhammad led all Colonels in kills with 12 followed by Rachel Spreen with 11. Enjoli Ford finished the match with 17 digs in the match and Amy Whitehead would finish with 22 assists.
Yartoski would lead all players with 18 kills for the Bearkats, along with 12 digs for the double-double. The next closest Bearkat was Katie Phillips with 8, while Megan McNamera finished with 28 assists for Sam Houston
As a team, the Bearkats hit only 214 as a team, but limited the Colonels to a .098 hitting percentage. Sam Houston would only mount 15 errors to 40 kills while the Colonels took more attempts and had seven more kills, they finished the game with 33 errors.
Nicholls will be back in action again Tuesday against Southeastern in Hammond at 7 p.m.
