THIBODAUX, La. - Behind the strong play of sophomore quarterback Derrick Fourroux on Saturday night, McNeese State defeated Nicholls 28-7 in John L. Guidry Stadium for homecoming in front of 6,486 spectators.

"McNeese State has a great football team, and they made all the right plays to win," said head coach Jay Thomas. "We are going to come back in here and get right back at it next week, and correct the mistakes that we made tonight."

The Colonels (5-2, 2-1) shut down McNeese State (7-0, 3-0) on their opening series, and scored when they got the ball back on offense to go up 7-0 at the 9:15 mark of the first quarter. Junior running back Zack Morgan did the honors from 22-yards out, and senior Alex Romero tacked on the extra point to cap off the eight play 81-yard drive that used 3:36 of game clock.

Nicholls early 7-0 lead was the largest deficit that the Cowboys had faced all season and responded with 28-answered points to close out the game. However, the Colonels went into the locker room at halftime only trailing by a touchdown, 14-7.

Leading the charge for the Cowboys was Fourroux who accounted for 186 yards of total offense (101 rushing and 85 passing) and two touchdowns. As a team, the Cowboys out rushed the Colonels 281 to 246 while carrying 53 times to Nicholls 43. Senior running back Kris Bush led all rushers in the game with 101 to go along with one touchdown.

For the Colonels, it was Morgan leading the cavalry with 55 yards on a mere four carries followed by senior fullback Joseph Tobias with 45. Junior quarterback Vincent Montgomery was third on the team in rushing with 38-yards and the game's leading passer by throwing for 92-yards.

Brant Linde had a game-high 9.5 tackles in the contest which included one sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss. Senior safety Kareem Moore led the Colonels in tackles with 7.5 in the loss.

The Colonels will be back in action next week at Central Arkansas (4-3, 3-1) who beat Southeastern La. (2-5, 1-2) 37-33 in Hammond, La. on Saturday afternoon.
