THIBODAUX, La. -
After a grueling 13 games where the Colonels soccer team was unable to put both offense and defense together, on the final home game of the season, it would be a senior that sparked the Nicholls to a 4-1 victory over Lamar Sunday afternoon.
On senior day, Nicholls (2-14-1, 1-5) seniors Jessica Schwartz and Heather Gamble were honored for their years of service to the Colonel squad, and soon after, Schwartz scored the first goal of game and would be one of four different Colonels that would score in the game. "I felt like the team was finally putting it together, and today we played for a full 90 minutes and got a victory," head coach Cindy Piper said. "These girls played their hearts out for Jessica and Heather and it worked in our favor today."
The Colonels were able to get off 15 shots in the game, with nine on goal, while Lamar got off 14 with seven on goal, with the only goal coming from Keri Melancon.
After Schwartz's goal in the 12th minute from Alicia Gautreau, each flip flopped roles for the next one with Gautreau scoring a goal in the 24 minute putting the Colonels up 2-0 early.
About 20 minutes into the second period, Gillian McCarter scored her second goal of the season in the 64th minute from Jessica Bedford. After the Lamar score in the 68th minute, Gamble came close to scoring goal of her own, but in that same series Gautreau would score her second goal of the game after the ball bounced off the top of the crossbar and into the net.
Goalie Molly Mersereau, who has seen a barrage of shots lately, allowed the one Cardinal goal and stopped six Lamar shots in the game. "Having two seniors in Jessica and Heather that mean so much to a school is a hard thing to lose, and i hope we can continue playing well so we can send them out on a good note," Piper said.
The Colonels will hit the road for the final three games of the season against Southeastern next Sunday at 1 p.m.
