Final Stats

THIBODAUX, La. - The Lady Colonels had four players score in double digits, and their defense forced 26 turnovers as Nicholls cruised to a 69-59 victory over in-state rival Dillard on Tuesday night.

"It is always good to start off the season with a win," said head coach Mark Cook. "I was pleased with the effort, but we have some areas that we need to address if plan on getting better as a team."

Senior Katherine Plummer stole the show in the Lady Colonels (1-0) season opener as she dropped a game best 21 points on the Lady Blue Devils (0-1) in the victory. Plummer also added seven rebounds, six steals and six assists to her individual stat sheet.

Making her collegiate debut was true freshman Shelly West, and she did not disappoint by ringing up a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. West, a native of Australia, also had two steals, a block, and an assist in the win.

Joining Plummer and West in double figures was junior Dominique Washington and sophomore Funaki Kefu with 10 points each. Washington added three rebounds and two steals in her 19 minutes on the court, while Kefu had two rebounds in her 17 minutes of game time.

Dillard only had two players in double digits for the game with their leading scorer being Tawonna Cage with 19 points and a team high tying six rebounds. Cage also was deadly from outside by making 4-of-9 three point attempts, however she led the team in turnovers with five. The only other Lady Blue Devil in double figures was Sandra Nweke with 10 and a team best seven rebounds.

As a team, Nicholls out shot Dillard from field goal range by averaging 41.3% to the Lady Blue Devils 34.5%. Although Dillard did out gun the Lady Colonels from three-point range by converting 35.3% to Nicholls 26.3% for the game.

Nicholls will be back in action on Saturday November 17 at Tennessee State. Tip-off for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
