The Nicholls women's basketball team opened its road slate with a 63-61 loss to Tennessee State in the Gentry Center Saturday night. Three Lady Colonel players tallied double-digits in points with junior Christie Bryant leading the way with 15. After the day, Nicholls and Tennessee State both move to 1-1 on the season.
Down 12 with 12:47 to go into the game, the Lady Colonels were able to claw all the way back to tie the contest 58-58 with 4:05 remaining after Bryant got fouled and nailed back-to-back shots from the charity stripe. The Tigers regained the lead, 61-58, when Charisse Hicks connected on a three with 3:42 remaining on the clock. Tennessee State played stingy defense and held the Nicholls to only three shots late in the game, including a jumper by Bryant with three seconds remaining that came up empty handed and sealed the victory for the Tigers.
The Tigers held the Lady Colonels to 48.4 percent (15-for-31) in the first half and took a 44-36 lead into the locker room at the half.
Tennessee State finished the contest 39.4 percent (26-for-66) from the floor and a 38.9 percent (7-for-18) mark from beyond the arc. Nicholls ended the night shooting 37 percent (20-for-54) from the floor but only connected on 20 percent (3-for-15) of its three-point tries.
Three Tigers players recorded double-digits in points. Sophomore Jheri Booker led Tennesse State with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Obiageli Okafor and Charisse Hicks each added 15.
Senior Katherine Plummer came away with 14 points and Tiffany Jones contributed with 12 points.
Tennessee State won the battle on the glass by out rebounding Nicholls 47-3, while both teams coughed up the ball 21 times in the contest.
Nicholls will remain on the road and travel to Albequerque, New Mexico, to take part in the UNM Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Colonels will face tournament host New Mexico on Friday, Nov. 23 with tipoff scheduled for 7 CST.
