The University of New Orleans had three players score in double digits including Talishia Young, who came off the bench to dish in 19, as the Lady Privateers (4-2) defeated the Nicholls Lady Colonels (1-4), 70-51, on Tuesday night at the Human Performance Center.
New Orleans controlled the tempo of the game by jumping out to an early 12-6 lead midway through the first period. The Lady Colonels responded by going on a 12-6 run to tie the game, 18-18, with 5:55 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Privateers rallied with a 13-4 run to take a nine-point lead, 31-22, into the locker room at the break.
Nicholls held tight during the second period and pulled within eight, 57-49, but New Orleans ended any hopes of a comeback by going on a 13-2 run during the final three minutes of the contest to secure a 19-point victory.
With the win the Lady Privateers improved their record to 4-1 against Southland Conference opponents. New Orleans has defeated Stephen F. Austin (74-69), McNeese State (75-51), Northwestern State (77-62) and Nicholls (70-51) and their only loss came at the hands of UTSA by the score of 60-46.
Nicholls played without true freshman Shelley West, who was unable to participate due to a day-to-day injury. West, a 6-1 forward from Canberra, Australia, leads the Lady Colonels with 7.3 rebounds a game and is the second leading scorer averaging 10.3 points a game.
Senior Katherine Plummer led the Lady Colonels with 12 points and four boards, while Maggie Green dished in 11 points.
Talishia Young led the Lady Privateers with a double-double. Young netted19 points, shot a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe, and brought down 15 boards. Le'Della English dished in 15 points and Candice McGee added 12 points for New Orleans.
New Orleans shot 41.8 percent from the floor, 40.0 percent from beyond-the-arc and 68.8 percent from the line, while Nicholls shot 36.5 percent from the floor, 23.1 percent from beyond-the-arc and 55.6 percent from the charity stripe.
The Lady Privateers controlled the glass by out rebounding the Lady Colonels, 50-25.
Nicholls will hit the road for a contest against head coach Mark Cook's alma mater Wichita State. Tipoff is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
