ALCORN, Mississippi -
The Alcorn Lady Braves had four players in double digits including Tanika Nunez who led the pace with 20 points as they downed the Nicholls Lady Colonels 68-45 at Davey L. Whitney Complex on Tuesday night.
Alcorn State (1-5), who never trailed in the game, jumped out to an eight-point lead, 20-12, with 10:19 remaining in the first half. Nicholls (1-7) cut the lead to six, 30-24, with 3:05 remaining until the break, but Alcorn managed to take a 10-point lead into the locker room at the break, 34-24.
The Lady Braves continued its hot shooting in the second half and led by as many as 24 points with 4:05 remaining in the contest. The Lady Colonels were able to cut the lead to 15 on two occasions, but the Alcorn fought back and captured a 23-point victory, 68-45.
Katherine Plummer continued her shooting streak for Nicholls by leading the Lady Colonels with 21 points, eight boards and six steals.
Nicholls finished the contest shooting 20.6 percent from the floor, 11.1 percent from the three-point range and 66.7 percent from the line, while Alcorn State shot 45.7 percent from the floor, 50.0 percent from beyond-the-arc and 75.0 percent from the charity stripe.
Alcorn won the battle of the glass by out rebounding Nicholls 41-35, but Nicholls controlled the ball as the forced 24 turnovers and only coughed up the ball 12 times.
The Lady Colonels will hit the road once again as they travel to Lafayette on Tuesday, Dec. 18 to face Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m.
