After the Colonels' tennis teams went on a Texas road swing with the men having matches against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas- Pan American, and Texas San Antonio, while the women only played Texas-Pan American, the Colonels returned home on Saturday to beat Xavier.
"We are getting better and better with every match," said head coach Jim Hunter. "The youth in us is showing right now, but with experience we will get better."
The Lady Colonels won all their doubles matches and all their singles competitions to beat the Gold Rush 7-0 on Saturday. All three doubles matches for the women's team were won by the identical score of 8-2, and the Lady Colonels picked up the doubles point as they headed into singles play.
In single competition, the Lady Colonels continued their domination, and Sara Hanecsh had the most lopsided win of the day as she defeated Yuliem Dominguez 6-0, 6-1.
The men's tennis squad also had similar luck as they won their match against Xavier 6-1. Doubles action concluded in favor of the Colonels 8-2, 8-6, and 8-2 wins over the Gold Rush. Like the Lady Colonels, the men's team had their success carry over into singles play where the Colonels only lost one match. Phenyo Matong fell to Xavier's Miroslav Vukicevic, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Men's Tennis opened up the Texas road swing with a battle at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and lost 6-1 to the conference leading Islanders. The Islanders swept the doubles matches, and almost the singles matches but Maxine Bouhoulle would not allow it. Bouhoulle defeated Joey Farias 6-4, 7-5 for Nicholls lone singles win.
The Colonels then followed up that battle with a match against Texas-Pan American where both the men and women squared off against the Broncs. The men lost their game 5-2 to Texas-Pan American, and in the doubles action, Alexandru Gasca-Silav and Bouhoulle defeated Gary Bianco and Shashank Vij to give the Colonels their only victory in doubles competition.
In singles competition, Nicholls got huge wins from Matong and Ricardo Van Bolderick. Matong defeated David Lopez-Heredia 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, and Van Bolderick defeated Vij 6-2, 6-3.
The women fought hard against Texas-Pan American in their only contest in the month of February, but lost 4-3 to the lady Broncs. The Colonel's Celine Stegner and Karlijn Sissingh demolished Julia Cirne-Lima and Giana Oliveira by the score of 8-1 to open doubles action. Adeline Vallet and Hanesch held a 6-4 lead over Luisa Cantu and Stephanie Willerding, but the Texas-Pan American duo rallied to defeat Vallet and Hanesch 9-7.
Stegner and Sissingh's success carried over into their singles matches as they both picked up victories. Stegner defeated Oliveira 6-3, 6-2 while Sissingh beat Silke Buksik 7-6, 6-3. Nicholls' Vallet also picked up a win in singles by defeating the Broncs' Willerding 7-5, 6-4.
The men closed out the Texas road trip at Texas-San Antonio with a 6-1 loss to the Roadrunners. Vlad-Lucian Popa and Eric Fisher defeated Rodrigo Morgado and Nenad Maric 8-2 in doubles to give the Colonels their only in the pair on pair competition. Matong picked up the Colonels lone singles win over Maric 7-5, 6-3.
