COLONELS SPLIT ON FINAL DAY OF UNO TOURNAMENT

NEW ORLEANS, La. - After falling to UNO in three sets in the marquee match up Friday night, the Colonels volleyball team looked to improve upon last nights match and focus on Delaware and Alcorn State in the last day of the Four Points by Sheraton UNO Invitational.

Unfortunately, Delaware got the best of the Colonels in the morning game, sweeping the Colonels in three straight sets. Still, Nicholls fought back and took it's frustrations out on Alcorn State, sweeping them 3-0 in the team's final match of the day bringing the Colonels to 2-5 on the season.

Nicholls seemed outmatched early in the Delaware game, falling as far behind by as many as 15 points before losing the first set 30-13. Much was the same in the second set with the team falling behind by eight points at one time, but the Colonels would fight back to make a game of it late, but still fell 30-25. In the third set, Delaware would keep Nicholls from making of game of the final set defeating Nicholls 30-17. Rachel Spreen would lead all Colonels with 13 kills in the match.

There was a little less flash in the final game against Alcorn State, but the outcome was much different with Nicholls earning the three set victory. This time the Colonels played the role of dominator bursting out of the gate with a 30-16 set one victory. Although Nicholls let Alcorn State gain wind in the second set, but a nine point lead at one point would assure Nicholls of the victory.The third set was much closer in the beginning than the first two, but the Colonels would not be denied the victory and pulled away late winning 30-15. Kindra Halverson led the team in kills with 10 followed by Aaliyah Muhammad and Casey Wirwille with seven each.

The Colonels next series of matches will be in the Memphis Tiger Invitational next weekend with the first game against host team Memphis.
