RAGIN CAJUNS ROLL PAST COLONELS

Sept. 19, 2007

Box Score

THIBODAUX, La. - The most goals the Colonels soccer team has given up this season is three against Birmingham Southern. The most the team has given up in a two-game span was exactly five points. In Nicholls' game against Louisiana-Lafayette, five was the number of goals the Ragin Cajuns would finish with in their 5-0 win against the Colonels Wednesday afternoon in Thibodaux.

ULL dominated from start to finish in the match scoring two goals in the first period and three in the final period. All five goals were scored by five different Ragin Cajun players. In the game, Nicholls' futility on offense showed again as only three shots on goal were attempted by the team.

The first goal came in the 16th minute as Jordan Blevins found Kelli Jestes for the goal. No less than a minute later, Jestes found Courtney Hofland for the second goal in the period.

ULL came out firing on all cylinders in the second period, scoring the third goal of the game from the foot of Callie Oliver 56 seconds into the period. Blevins would earn her second assist of the game on the score.

The fourth goal would put the proverbial nail in the coffin for the Colonels, as Lyndsey Winters fired a shot from the front of the goalie box that looked to be too high for the goal, but it had just enough spin to get past goalie Molly Mersereau, bounce off the top of the post and fall into the net. The fifth and final score would come on a penalty kick by Erin Thompson.

Mersereau would have eight saves in the game, allowing the five goals from the 30 shots that the Ragin' Cajuns took in the match. "ULL showed how good of a team they are, and used our youth against us today," head coach Cindy Piper said. "They had a really good game plan against us, and all we can do is keep working towards getting better so that we can compete in conference."

The Colonels will next participate in the Southeastern tournament Friday and Saturday.
