THIBDOAUX, La. -
It took almost an hour before the Colonels were able to get a break, and it came in the form of a corner kick from sophomore Michelle Branscome and substitution to put in Kaity Mattssonn.
Going into the 56th minute, head coach Cindy Piper put in Mattssonn when Branscome was to put the ball in play with a corner kick. As soon as the ball left Branscome's foot, it found Mattssonn's head and then the back of the net. It would be the only goal Nicholls would need to defeat the Southern Jaguars 1-0 at the Colonels soccer complex Sunday afternoon.
"It was another great effort from the players today, especially with the sloppy field conditions we had," Piper said. "We found a burst of energy in that second half, and it worked to our advantage."
The Colonels (1-1) were on the attack most of the afternoon with a total of 18 shots on goal, seven more shots than Southern. Molly Mersereau also played big for Nicholls with nine saves in the game.
Nicholls will finish their three game homestand against Jackson State Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
