HAMMOND, La. -
Although the Nicholls State soccer team was able to end a scoring drought that lasted over 200 minutes of play, the team would still come up on the losing end of both matches in the Southeastern Lion Classic, falling to South Alabama on Friday 4-2 and Belmont today 4-0.
Again, the Colonels would allow a team to pounce offensively from the start as the Jaguars would score first in the first period, and twice right out of the gate in the second for the 3-0 advantage. Jessica Bedford would score to bring the Colonels to within two of the Jaguars, but Carly Williams would score for USA for the game winning score of the match, although Sara West would score the final goal for Nicholls making the final score 4-2 in favor of USA.
Belmont would only allow the Colonels to get five shots on the day in today's match, allowing another player to score more than one goal. Erica Carter, a freshman at Belmont, scored two of the Bruins four goals, while two other Bruin players chipped in for the other two. Belmont would fire 25 shots on Nicholls in the win, the fourth time in as many games that the Colonels have given up 20 or more shots in a game.
For her efforts in the Lion Classic, junior Katherine Peters was named to the Lion Classic all-tournament team.
With the losses, Nicholls drops to 1-7-1 and will next take on Mississippi Valley State at home Wednesday at 3 p.m.
