THIBODAUX, La. -
As far as soccer games go, the match between the Colonels and Jackson State Tigers was reminiscent of a heavyweight boxing match, with each team trading blow after blow waiting to see if the other would fall. However in this match, neither team would fall, and both Nicholls and Jackson State would walk off the field with a 2-2 tie.
The two goals scored by the Colonels is the most in a game this season, and matched the total number of goals all weekend as the team scored only one goal in both the Troy and Southern games. "This type of game will give us the confidence to know we can fight through anything come conference time," head coach Cindy Piper said.
Nicholls would be the first to strike when in the 34th minute, Alicia Gautreau found Caitlyn Donegan streaking down the middle of the field and found the back of the net putting the Colonels up early. Jackson State however wasted no time in retaliating in the 42nd minute when Jennifer Phillips received a pass from Naira Crimiel and got a shot past Nicholls goalie Molly Mersereau.
Some time would pass between the next scored goal, but Phillips broke away from the pack and scored her second goal of the game in the 65th minute of the game. Down once again, Nicholls would fight back and Kaity Mattssonn scored her third goal in four days. Unfortunatly for the Tigers, they would begin to implode as head coach Adeniji Olagbegi was ejected from the game.
Although two overtimes would be exhausted in the match, neither team could score in the final 20 minutes and a tie was reached. "The team played a good second half, and played with a lot of desire," Piper said. "I was proud of the team for playing as hard as they did, especially after having so many games in the past few days."
The Colonels will next travel to Piper's former playing grounds of Gardner Webb to participate in the Gardner Webb Invitational against Birmingham Southern and Gardner Webb.
