LADY GOVERNORS DEFEAT COLONELS IN FINAL GAME OF TIGER INVITATIONAL

Sept. 8, 2007

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In the final game of the Tiger Invitational for the Nicholls State volleyball team, the team had to face the Austin Peay Lady Governors for a chance not to be swept in all four matches of the entire tournament. Just like the Colonels, Austin Peay also had no wins going into their match with Nicholls, so something had to give. The Colonels had a much better game plan against the Lady Governors, but Austin Peay had Nicholls' number and earned the three set victory 30-21, 30-22, 30-24.

Kindra Halverson and Rachel Spreen each had 10 kills for the Colonels, and for her efforts during the two-day tournament, Halverson was named to the Tiger Invitational All-Tournament team. Lady Governor's player Dodi Szymska was one of three players in double-digit kills for Austin Peay, and was also named to the all-tournament team.

Nicholls came out with an added intensity in the first set of the match, taking the lead back from Austin Peay during certain spots, but once the team hit the 21-point mark, found trouble getting its offense going again and allowed Austin Peay to earn the victory.

Again, the Colonels started the second set with a fire that would get the team off to a good start, but midway through the set found trouble offensively, giving the Lady Governors another opportunity to take the set from Nicholls.

The fatigue of playing four games in two days may have played a factor in the third set, as Nicholls was only able to tie the game once early in the set at 4-4. Nicholls would finish strong but Austin Peay had a good enough lead to ensure victory.

Nicholls will next take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Tuesday night in Hattisburg at 7 p.m.
