The Lady Colonels held a 24-16 lead at halftime, but it was not enough as the Lady Jacks hacked their way back in the second half to emerge 68-64 in the William R. Johnson Coliseum on Thursday night.
Leading the way for the Lady Colonels in the loss was senior guard Katherine Plummer with a team best 16 points and five assists. The only other double-digit scorer for Nicholls was true freshman Shelley West with 13. True freshman Christie Bryant finished the game with only seven points, but pulled down a career best and game high 11 rebounds in the loss.
Nicholls (2-10, 0-1) was outscored 52-40 in the second period to fall in their Southland Conference opener to Stephen F. Austin. Despite their struggles in the second half, the Lady Colonels shot 44.4 percent (16-of-36) from the floor, but could not overcome the 62.1 percent (18-of-26) shooting of the Lady Jacks.
At the midway break, Stephen F. Austin was only shooting 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from field goal range to Nicholls' 42.9 percent (9-of-21) mark. Both teams were cold from downtown in both periods as the Lady Colonels only made 3-of-13 three-balls, while the Lady Jacks were only successful on 1-of-8 for the game.
The difference in the game was turnovers as the Lady Colonels committed 22 that led to 23-points for the Lady Jacks. Stephen F. Austin had 13 miscues in the game which led to only five points for Nicholls.
