THIBODAUX, La. -
Texas State's three-point shooting propelled the Bobcats to an 80-66 victory over the Lady Colonels Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.
The Bobcats (10-7, 4-0) sank 10-of-21 buckets from beyond the arc, led by Joyce Ekworomadu's four treys, while Nicholls managed just 2-of-10 from three-point land. Ekworomadu finished with a game-leading 23 points.
In the second half, Nicholls (3-12, 1-3) outscored Texas State 35-34 and outrebounded its opponent as well, pulling down 27 to the Bobcats' 24, but couldn't overcome a 15 point (46-31) halftime deficit.
The Lady Colonels were led by senior Katherine Plummer and sophomore Maggie Green who netted 20 each. Plummer added a team-leading nine rebounds, including seven on the defensive end, while junior Christie Bryant grabbed eight boards.
Texas State scored 14 points off of 12 Lady Colonel turnovers, a big difference in the game.
"Our goal is always to have less than 10 turnovers," said head coach Mark Cook, "so we're not happy to have turned the ball over 12 times."
Nicholls saw more production off of the bench in the contest, with 18 points from non-starters. But the Bobcats depth allowed them 35 bench points.
Texas State opened the game on a 10-2 run, but the Lady Colonels climbed back to make it a three point game (18-15) before the Bobcats ran away with a lead they would not relinquish.
"We've got to stop letting teams go on big runs," added Cook. "You can't let teams make big runs on you and the not come back from that."
Nicholls takes a week-long break before returning to Stopher Gym on Jan. 26 for a 1 p.m. tip with Southeastern Louisiana.
