THIBODAUX, La. -
On a night where Nicholls volleyball participated in a national fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Colonels dominated, picking up a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) win over Southeastern and pulling off the sweep for the season.
"Hopefully we sold enough t-shirts and raised enough money to make a contribution and do our part for the Susan G. Komen Foundation," said Chris Laird, head coach of the Colonels.
The Colonels (6-12, 3-5 SLC) finished the night with a total of 27 digs after asking fans to pledge per dig for 'Dig for the Cure.' Freshman Danielle Daigle (Napoleonville, La./Assumption) led with nine digs, while three other Colonels each posted four.
Junior Amy Whitehead (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) became Nicholls' all-time leading assist giver, tallying 31 on the night for a new record of 2,274.
"It's a great win," added Laird. It was great to be at home. It was really great to win in three because we've been struggling with finishing and taking care of business when we have the opportunity to get on top. Southeastern really pushed us."
Senior Mallory McInnis (Meraux, La./Chalmette) recorded a team-high eight kills, adding two block assists on the night, while freshman Rachel Yezak (Houston, Texas/Klein) and senior Chelsey Adams (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Pensacola JC) each tallied seven kills.
Nicholls broke a 17-17 stalemate in the first set thanks to back-to-back kills from juniors Rachel Spreen (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) and Amy Beshire (Huntsville, Texas/Huntsville) and a Southeastern Louisiana error. The Colonels then used a 5-2 run to finish out the frame with a 25-20 victory.
The second set was closer as the teams knotted the frame at 21-all before sophomore Elise King (New Orleans, La./Edna Karr)served the Colonels three-straight points and Nicholls picked up the win 25-23.
The Colonels held the lead through much of the third set, stretching ahead in the end with four-straight to cap off a 25-20 victory served out by senior Enjoli Ford (New Orleans, La./McDonough 35).
"We really hope that our families and friends will come back on Friday and Saturday and support us," Laird noted. "Those are big matches for us as we continue to try to get into the tournament, so we hope that our crowd will come back and continue to support us as they have all season."
Nicholls will return to the court this weekend, hosting Texas State and Texas Arlington on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Friday night's serve is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's match will begin at 2 p.m.
