LAKE CHARLES, La. - Sophomore Kaity Mattsson put one in the back of the net for Nicholls in the 30th minute, but the Cowgirl's five goals in the first 12 minutes of play were too much to overcome as the Colonels dropped a 6-1 decision at McNeese Friday afternoon.

"These young ladies have to learn to be mentally ready when they step onto the field," said Cindy Piper, head coach of the Colonels. "We are only as good as the effort we put in and the heart we have."

McNeese State's Kamryn Koch recorded a hat trick on the night, scoring in the third, fifth and seventh minutes of the game.

"Five goals in 12 minutes is not acceptable, especially at this level," noted Piper. "We competed after that point, especially in the second half. We had some good opportunities, but fell short."

Freshmen Sarah Damen (Houma, La./Terrebonne) and Lana Ashford (Baton Rouge, La./Tara) split time in goal for Nicholls. Damen, who started, allowed five goals and made two saves, while Ashford gave up one goal in the second half.

"McNeese is a good team that plays to their strengths," Piper added, "but we should have had a better result."

Nicholls will travel to Lamar on Sunday for a 2 p.m. kickoff with the Cardinals.
