THIBODAUX, La. -
Early goals by Southeastern Louisiana were too much for Nicholls to overcome Sunday afternoon, as the Lions posted a 5-1 victory over the Colonels on Senior Day at the Colonel Soccer Complex.
Nicholls (2-16, 0-9) honored lone senior Katherine Peters (Alexandira, La./Louisiana Tech) in a pregame ceremony. Peters started 55 of 56 games through three seasons with the Colonels, playing mostly in the back line.
"I thought Kat had a solid game today," said head coach Cindy Piper. "Southeastern has some dangerous players up top and I thought she did a really good job defending against them. We're going to miss Kat. She's a leader on and off the field, and a great person. She's been a great addition for us."
Southeastern picked up a goal at the 1:31 mark off the foot of Kristin McDonald, who caught at deflection off of a Lion corner.
The Lions would score three more times within the first 24 minutes, putting the Colonels down 4-0.
"We made some mistakes in the first half," Piper noted. "Again it seems like the first half is what kills us. The spring season will be really important for us because we need to work on our weaknesses and see if we can't improve in the off-season."
Redshirt freshman Kandice Champagne (Houma, La./Terrebonne) scored a late, first-half goal for Nicholls, one-touching a pass from junior Alicia Gautreau (Gonzales, La./East Ascension) into the back of the net to give the Colonels momentum heading into halftime.
Southeastern Louisiana scored once more near the end of the contest, for a 5-1 final.
Freshman Lana Ashford (Baton Rouge, La./Tara) started in goal for Nicholls, allowing all four first-half goals and making two saves, while freshman Sarah Damen (Houma, La./Terrebonne) allowed just one goal through the second half and made nine saves.
