COLONELS SECOND HALF RALLY FALLS SHORT AGAINST LADIES

Dec. 10, 2008

Final Stats

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Colonels had four players score 10-plus points, and cut a 15-point halftime deficit to six in the second half, but the Ladies pulled away in the closing minutes to edge Nicholls 74-63 on Wednesday night in the Gold Dome.

"Our lack of rebounding in the first half really cost us, and we dug ourselves quite a hole there. However, the team rallied in the second half and players stepped up to get us back in the game," said head coach DoBee Plaisance.

"I'm very proud of our team in how they fought back. We outscored them [Centenary] in the second half, and played much better. We made mistakes, but they are correctable."

Leading the Colonels (0-6) in scoring was true freshman Jasmine Hoskins with 15 points and 10 rebounds, marking her first career double-double. Following her in double figures in scoring was true freshmen Nadia Cox with 14 and Danielle Douglas with 13, and senior Christie Bryant with 12. Bryant also added seven rebounds in the loss.

The Ladies (2-7) boasted the game's leading scorer in freshman Beth Alberson with 20 points, while sophomore Anne Farrell and junior Bethany Joseph followed her across the decade mark with 16 and 12, respectively.

Centenary held the rebounding edge, 44-to-41, while committing one less turnover, 22 to Nicholls' 23, in the game.

Nicholls trailed at halftime, 42-27, but opened up the second stanza with a 13-6 run to cut the lead to eight, 48-40, at the 14:25 mark. After Centenary extended its lead, the Colonels remained resilient, cutting the lead to six points, 65-59, with 4:42 left in the game. The comeback was fueled by a 10-0 run that used over three and half minutes off the clock.

However, the Ladies found their groove in the Gold Dome over the last four minutes, and closed out the game on a 9-3 run to get the victory.

To start the game, the Colonels cracked the scoreboard first at the 18:09 mark with a Bryant bucket, and increased its lead to 5-4 at the first media timeout. After both teams traded baskets for the majority of the first half, the Ladies put together a 16-9 run to close out the half to go into the locker room with the 42-27 advantage.

Nicholls will be back in action on Monday December 15 when they host Alcorn State at 5 p.m. in the Harang Auditorium. The men's contest against Dillard will follow at 7 p.m. as a part of the doubleheader.
