Box Score
THIBODAUX, La. -
Nicholls played their first home game of the season in front of 224 strong in the Colonel Softball Complex, and fell to the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss, 5-3, in the midweek match up.
The Colonels (0-3) trailed 3-2 heading into the last inning, but Southern Miss (3-2) came alive at the plate with two outs as Kristin Pilgrim hit a double down the left field line, that scored Allison Bullard. The Golden Eagles' Jennifer Fox followed suit by slapping one down the left field line to score Pilgrim.
Nicholls had their shot in the bottom of the seventh, and put one run in the books when Amy Thibodeaux hit a screamer up the middle that scored Kodi Butler from third to make the score 5-3. Unfortunately, Nicholls efforts fell short and left the Colonels still winless in their 2008 campaign, while pumping out seven hits to Southern Miss' nine. The Golden Eagles had two errors in the contest as well.
Getting her first start as a Colonel was sophomore Lacey Gros, and she allowed seven hits and three earned runs while fanning four in seven innings of work in the loss. Gros was relieved by Jessica Barksdale in the top of the fifth and threw the rest of the game as she surrendered two hits and two earned runs.
Picking up the win for Southern Miss was Meghan Harbuck as she went the distance while recording one earned run and five strike outs.
Nicholls' Kathyrn Harrell picked up her first two hits of the year in loss in her 2-for-3 effort from the plate while Gabby Lemaire, Haley Burkett, and Thibodeaux each had an RBI. Lemaire finished the contest 1-for-2, and Burkett rung up a 1-for-1 showing at the plate.
Nicholls will be back in action on Friday in Baton Rouge, La. for the Easton Tiger Classic hosted by LSU. The Colonels will square off in the tournament on Friday against Chattanooga at 1:15 p.m. and then Ball State at 8 p.m.
