THIBODAUX, La. -
With the game tied up, Texas-San Antonio's Devin Gibson went to the line with 0.5 seconds and broke a 52-52 tie as he sank two free throws to lead the Roadrunners to a 54-52 victory in Stopher Gym on Saturday evening.
Gibson went to the line after junior Justin Payne fouled him as he was in the act of shooting. After Gibson's two makes at the charity strip, the Colonels tried to heave it down court for a shot, but UTSA knocked the ball away to ensure their win.
"We were very casual with the ball and did not protect it. I thought that we played well on defense and our offense played well in spurts," said head coach J.P. Piper.
The Colonels (7-19, 2-9) led by as many as 12 points at the 15:16 mark of the second half, and held the Roadrunners from scoring for the first 5:20 of the second period. However, the Roadrunners (10-13, 4-6) turned it up a notch the rest of the way and out scored Nicholls 30-16 over the remaining 14:40 to get their second consecutive road win. UTSA beat Southeastern La. 61-57 in Hammond on Thursday. The Lions, who lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday 62-56, are the Colonels next opponent.
Nicholls shot 48.6 percent (17-of-35) for the game from field goal range and out rebounded Texas-San Antonio 24-to22, but the Colonels did commit 26 turnovers to the Roadrunners' 21 while being more efficient from behind the arc with a 41.7 percent (5-of-12) mark.
Only one player crossed the decade mark for the Colonels with junior Ryan Bathie doing the honor with 11 points in 27 minutes of work. The next closest to scoring 10-plus was senior Adonis Gray with nine points and a game best seven rebounds. True freshman Anatoly Bose's consecutive streak of scoring in double-figures came to an end in the loss at 11 contests as he only accounted for seven.
UTSA had two players score in double-digits with Gibson finishing with 11 and Joey Shank having 10.
Nicholls will be back on the hardwood this Saturday at Southeastern La. at 4 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. The contest will be preceded by the women's match up at 1 p.m. against the Lions.
