The Colonels fell 9-1 to nationally ranked LSU earlier in the day, but bounced back with an 8-6 victory over St. John's to head into the final day of the Easton Tiger Classic Tournament as the No.3 seed.
In the first game, No.7 LSU pounded out eight hits that helped put nine runs on the scoreboard over the course of six innings while the Colonels only scored one. The lone run for Nicholls came in the bottom of the fifth when junior Kodi Butler hit a single that scored true freshman Megan Powell.
Senior Jessica Barksdale picked up the loss after throwing allowing eight runs, which only five were earned, and seven walks. Barksdale did fan five Tigers in the loss.
The Colonels bounced back in the second game to defeat St. John's 8-6 in the evening contest in the classic. Nicholls (2-5) scored six runs in the top of the second, and started the onslaught with junior Haley Burkett's single that scored Danielle Clayton, and two-batters later with the bases loaded, senior Kathyrn Harrell was hit by a pitch that brought home sophomore Lacey Gros.
Then sophomore Leah Bland doubled to left center that cleared the bases and made the score 5-0, and Bland was brought home by a single by Butler.
The Red Storm (0-4) made a game of it as they picked up two-runs in the fourth, one-run in fifth, and two-runs sixth. Nicholls added a run in the top of the fifth and sixth, which helped aid the Colonels 8-6 victory.
For the game, Nicholls had 10 hits, and leading the Colonels was true freshman Whitney Roan with 2-for-3 with two runs and senior Rachel Pugh also had a two-hit outing as she went 2-for-4 at the plate. Racking up on the RBIs was Bland who had three as she went 1-for-4, and Harrell who had two as she finished 1-for-4 as well.
Getting the win in the circle was senior Krystalin Ensminger who threw five innings before being relieved by Gros who picked up the save.
The Colonels will play the No.2 seeded Chattanooga Mocs tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.to decide who goes to the tournaments' championship game at 2 p.m.
