DOUBLES POINT DECIDES COLONELS FATE

THIBODAUX, La. - Florida A&M captured the all-important doubles point on two tie-breaker sets to defeat Nicholls State's mens' tennis squad 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Nicholls tennis courts.

Eric Fisher/Phenyo Matong fell 9-8 (5) to Artiom Podgainii/Simbarashee Happy at No. 2 doubles, while Chris Hernandez/Sami Mouline dropped the No. 3 match 9-8 (6) to Paul Paige/Clifford Malivert.

Radu Ionescu/Vlad Popa won their No. 1 doubles contest 8-4.

In singles action, the Colonels saw wins as the two, three and four spots, but dropped the one, five and six matches.

Popa won his No. 2 match 6-2, 6-0 over Happy and Fisher remained undefeated in singles with a 6-1, 6-2 No. 3 win over Podgainii. Phenyo Matong took the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-4 from Michael Moore.

Inonescu fell 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5) in a tough tie-breaker singles match at the No. 1 position. At No. 5, Mouline lost 6-2, 6-0 to Paige, with Hernandez falling 6-2, 6-2 to Maurice Wamukova.

The Colonels travel to Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 16 to face the Tigers.
