Box Score
LAKE CHARLES, La. -
A first-inning home run by Cowboy shortstop Shon Landry plated three runs and gave McNeese all the runs they would need as the Colonels (4-15, 1-4 SLC) fell 4-1 Friday night in game two of the SLC series at Cowboy Diamond.
"We made on mistake in the first inning when we left that pitch up," noted Nicholls head coach Chip Durham, "and obviously it cost us. I thought we definitely pitched well-enough and played defense well-enough to win this game."
McNeese (5-14, 2-3 SLC) pitching held the Colonels to one run and two hits on the night.
Scott Holstein (1-3) took the win for the Cowboys, pitching six shut out innings before surrendering the Colonels only run of the game in the seventh. Jonathan Conrad picked up his first save of the season, throwing two innings of scoreless relief.
"My hat goes off to Holstein," added Durham. "He pitched a great game, but I think our guys should be good enough to go out and hit a guy like that."
Bryan Myers falls to 0-1 for Nicholls, lasting five innings with six hits, four runs, three strike outs and two walks.
McNeese added an insurance run in the fourth when Josh Cholley brought Jordan Venable, who had been hit by a pitch, around to score.
The Colonel bullpen was effective as Jacob Sullivan, Justin Breaux and Lance Guidroz combined for three innings of shut out relief. The trio did not walk a batter and Guidroz K'ed two.
For the Colonels, Brandt Boudreaux and Jordy Toups each went 1-for-3 as Boudreaux drove in the only run of the game for Nicholls. Both Boudreaux and Toups extend their hitting streaks. Boudreaux has now hit safely in 14-straight games, while Toups has successfully hit in each of the last four games.
Landry finished 2-for-4 on the night with three RBI.
"We have to be able to produce runs at the plate - to be able to put up four runs on any given day," Durham said. "Our back is against the wall now. We have to come out tomorrow and not get swept."
Nicholls will attempt to avoid the sweep Saturday in game three of the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Lance Dupuis is expected to get the start for the Colonels.
