Nicholls scored seven runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead, but could not hold on, falling 15-10 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field.
The Colonels (5-19, 1-7 SLC) got six hits, including RBI doubles from Brandt Boudreaux and Brett Hoeflich, and took advantage of four Islander errors in the fifth.
A&M-Corpus Christi chipped away at the Colonel lead, putting a run on in the sixth and seventh before exploding offensively and taking advantage of four walks in the eighth.
Brett Gips threw 3.2 innings of no-hit relief to get the win for the Islanders, improving to 1-0 on the season.
Dale Dickerson falls to 0-2 with the loss for the Colonels, giving up five runs on two hits and three walks through a third of an inning. Bryan Myers, who started on the mound for Nicholls, went 5.2 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and fanning five.
The Colonels mounted a small rally in the ninth as they cut the lead to five, plating Walter Jones on back-to-back-to-back singles from Jones, Kulbeth and Barksdale, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
At the plate for Nicholls, Keith Kulbeth went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Boudreaux and Anthony Wray each posted a multi-hit game.
Trey Hernandez led A&M-Corpus Christi, going 4-for-5 with five RBI as he drove two homeruns to deep center field in the Islander half of the eighth.
