Central Arkansas scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning to take a lead they would not relinquish, defeating Nicholls 8-5 and sweeping the series Sunday afternoon at UCA Field.
The Bears improve to 17-19 (6-9 SLC) on the season, while the Colonels fall to 6-29 (2-13 SLC).
Matt Whitaker picked up the win for Central Arkansas, improving to 3-3 on the year after tossing 7.0 innings of seven hit ball. Whitaker allowed five runs (three earned) and fanned eight Colonel batters. Reece Cross got the save for the Bears wrapping up the game allowing just one Colonel baserunner in the final two innings of the game.
Seth Webster drops to 1-4, throwing 6.0 innings and giving up eight runs (four earned) on nine hits after issuing two walks and striking out two.
Nicholls held a 4-3 lead after three innings, putting three runs on the board in the third when Brandt Boudreaux drove a two-RBI triple to right field that scored Brett Cook and Keith Kulbeth. Boudreaux scored later in the inning on a passed ball.
In the fifth, Central Arkansas scored four runs on three hits and two Colonel errors.
The Bears added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Chris Houk.
Kulbeth posted three hits for Nicholls, finishing the day 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Kulbeth, T.J. Menerey and Anthony Wray both recorded doubles for Nicholls at the plate.
Boudreaux and Menerey each had two hits for the Colonels with Boudreaux driving in two RBI.
The Colonels travel to Baton Rouge for midweek games at LSU and Southern. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. in both games.
