BATON ROUGE, La. -
No. 14 LSU used a six run fourth inning to pick up the 10-2 victory in six innings over the Colonels on Wednesday in Tiger Park.
Nicholls (25-22, 12-9 SLC) will remain on the road as they play at Sam Houston State (26-22, 11-10 SLC) this weekend while LSU (33-13, 11-8 SEC) will also travel for a league series at No. 11 Tennessee (41-8, 14-0 SEC).
In the game, the Lady Tigers scored 10 runs on 12 hits to go along with one fielding error while the Colonels only plated two runs on three hits with no defensive miscues.
The Lady Tigers started the scoring off in the bottom of the second when Erica Sluss hit a solo homerun to centerfield to give LSU the early 1-0 lead.
LSU broke the game open in the sixth with a six run stand to take a 7-0 lead. In the inning, the Lady Tigers had six runs on six hits and left the bases loaded.
The score remained that way until the top of the sixth when the Colonels cracked the scoreboard courtesy of a two run homerun by junior Danielle Clayton that brought home senior Kat Harrell from first. Both runs were unearned due in part to a fielding error by the Lady Tigers that would have ended the inning prior to Clayton's at bat.
The Lady Tigers tacked on three more runs in their half of the sixth, and the game was called once their 10th run crossed the plate.
Picking up the win was LSU's Tiffany Garcia as she improved to 2-1 on the season, and dubbed with the loss in the circle for Nicholls was sophomore Audrey Wood as she fell to 6-4. Wood was replaced in the fourth inning by senior Jessica Barksdale who remained in the circle for the remainder of the game.
Leading the Colonels at the plate was Clayton with her 1-for-3 performance that included a homerun, two RBIs and a run. The only other Colonel recording a hit was sophomore Nicole Smith with her 1-for-2 showing.
Nicholls will play at Sam Houston State on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
