BATON ROUGE, La. -
Southern tallied 14 runs and 12 hits to claim a 14-10 victory over Nicholls Wednesday night at Lee-Hines Field.
The Colonels fall to 6-31 on the season, while the Jaguars improve their record to 19-11.
For the Jaguars, Kyle Wahl improves to 1-0 after tossing 3.2 innings of three-hit relief. Wahl allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and fanned four.
Jacob Sullivan drops to 0-3 on the season, allowing three runs on two hits in one inning of relief.
The Jaguars jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as the first five batters reached base and scored.
But Nicholls evened the slate with five runs of its own in the second with help from a two-RBI basehit by Brett Hoeflich.
Southern added three in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a lead big enough for the win.
The Colonels attempted rallies, putting three runs on the board in the fifth thanks to Jaguar errors, and adding two more in the eighth on a double by Hoeflich and a triple from Walter Jones.
Hoeflich finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.
Zac Bone and Keith Kulbeth also posted multi-hit games with two hits apiece and three runs between them.
The Colonels will return to Southland Conference action this weekend, playing host to Northwestern State for three games. Friday night's first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
