Box Score
THIBODAUX, La. -
Stephen F. Austin scored seven runs in the last two innings of the game being resumed from Saturday afternoon for a 7-1 win in game one, and plated 10 in game two to sweep the Colonels in the three-game series at Ray E. Didier Field.
"We swung the bats well enough to win the games today, we just didn't pitch well in RBI situations," said Nicholls head coach Chip Durham. "I thought our pitchers didn't have their best stuff, but they pitched with determination."
With the losses, Nicholls falls to 7-37, 2-19 on the season, while the Lumberjacks improve to 17-25, 6-14.
Game One:
SFA starter Lance Luetge went the distance for the Jacks, giving up nine hits but allowing just one run (unearned) to cross the plate. He did not give up a base-on-balls and struck out three, improving to 5-6 on the year.
Despite 7.2 innings on the mound, Bryan Myers falls to 1-4 on the season, allowing nine hits and four runs (one earned). The righty issued two walks and fanned three.
The Colonels took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Brandt Boudreaux that brought Brett Cook in from third, and threatened in the seventh, putting runners in scoring position with basehits from T.J. Menerey and Jordy Toups.
But the Jacks drove five hits past the Colonel infield took advantage of an error to score four runs and take the lead in the eighth.
SFA added three insurance runs in the ninth for the 7-1 win.
Toups led the Colonels, going 2-for-3 in the first game.
Game Two:
The Colonels and Jacks traded the lead back and forth until Stephen F. Austin took the lead for good in the top of the eighth on a two-RBI single by Noel Trevino that gave SFA a 9-7 advantage.
Rich Folmer picked up the win for the Lumberjacks, pitching 2.2 innings of no-run relief. He gave up just five hits and fanned four. Heath Konesheck got his first save of the season.
For the Colonels, Lance Guidroz falls to 0-2 after letting three runs cross the plate off of three hits in 2.2 innings of work out of the bullpen.
Nicholls scored runs in each of the first three innings, putting two up in the third on two Lumberjack errors.
Down 6-4 in the sixth, the Colonels posted three runs and three hits with two out to retake the lead 7-6 as Patrick Thompson, Shane Barksdale and Corey Arceneaux all drove hits to the gaps. Barksdale's two-RBI double plated Kulbeth and Thompson, while Arceneaux brought Barksdale in on his RBI single.
Brett Cook led Nicholls with three hits in the game and a run scored. Kulbeth, Thompson, Barksdale and Anthony Wray all had two hits. Barksdale was responsible for four of the Colonel's runs on the day, driving in two RBI and scoring twice.
"They had a lot of extra-base hits that came with runners on base," added Durham, "while we had 40 hits on the weekend - 36 of them for singles. We never put ourselves in a situation to win games."
The Colonels return to action Tuesday night, traveling to New Orleans to face Tulane in the final midweek game of the season.
