Box Score
NEW ORLEANS, La. -
The Colonels jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold on, falling 10-3 at Tulane in the final midweek game of the 2008 season.
For the Green Wave, Robby Broach improves to 5-1 on the year throwing 3.0 innings of one-hit relief. Broach did not issue a walk and fanned two Colonels.
Justin Breaux drops to 1-5 on the season, allowing five runs on 10 hits. The lefty walked three and struck out one in 4.2 innings of work.
The Colonels got on the board early with three in the first as Brandt Boudreaux drove an RBI single into left field with the bases loaded, plating Colonel lead-off man Walter Jones. The Green Wave pitcher issued back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to the next two hitters to bring in two more for the Colonels as Patrick Thompson and Keith Kulbeth came in to score.
"We got off to a good start - taking advantage of some control problems their pitcher was having - but their bullpen came in and did a great job shutting us down," said Colonel skipper Chip Durham. "I thought we swung the bats well against some good pitching."
The Wave took a 4-3 lead in the third on an RBI basehit to left by Jared Dyer that scored Anthony Scelfo, who doubled to centerfield earlier in the inning.
Tulane added insurance runs - one in each the fifth and seventh and four in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead in the game.
"We just didn't come up and get the job done in RBI situations," Durham added. "That's been something that's hurt us all year. We made some errors and let runners advance that took away double plays. Take away that stuff and you never know what could have happened."
Jones led Nicholls, going 4-for-5 at the plate with one run scored.
Brandt Boudreaux posted two hits on the night, driving in an RBI, while Kevin Persick was 2-for-2 after pinch-hitting in the seventh.
Colonel reliever Nathan Quebedeaux threw 2.1 innings of one-hit, one-run ball out of the bullpen.
Scelfo finished 3-for-3 on the night, scoring two runs and driving in another for the Green Wave.
"This is a great Tulane club and hopefully we'll see them representing the state of Louisiana in an NCAA Regional and down the line," noted Durham.
The Colonels return to action this weekend, traveling to Texas-Arlington for a three-game weekend series. Friday night's first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
