THIBODAUX, La. -
Lamar used a three-run, four-hit third inning to take a lead they would not relinquish, defeating Nicholls 7-2 in Sunday's series rubber match at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels fall to 6-24 (2-10 SLC), while Lamar goes to 20-9 (10-2 SLC) on the season.
Tim Erickson, the Cardinal starter went the distance, scattering six hits and two runs through the nine innings. The lefty K'ed five Colonels to improve to 4-0 on the season.
For the Colonels, Seth Webster falls to 1-3, throwing 6.1 innings and giving up 11 hits to Cardinal batters. Webster allowed five runs (one earned), walked one and fanned two.
"Seth Webster threw a great game against arguably the best-hitting team in the conference," said assistant coach Seth Thibodeaux.
The Colonel bullpen combination of Ryan Harding, Justin Breaux, Lance Guidroz and Dale Dickerson allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two through 2.2 inning of work.
Nicholls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second as Brandt Boudreaux led off with a bunt single and Brett Hoeflich walked. Anthony Wray picked up an RBI, scoring Boudreaux on a bunt single to first base, while Hoeflich came in on a ground out by T.J. Menerey.
The Colonels threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two out, but could not manufacture a run.
Wray and Walter Jones posted multi-hit games, each with two in the game. Wray was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jones finished 2-for-3.
Boudreaux went 1-for-1 with a run scored.
"I would have liked to say that we could have scored a few more runs off of their lefty," added Thibodeaux, "but he may be the best arm in this league as well."
The Cardinals put up three in the third, one in the fourth and one in the fifth, adding two insurance runs in the eighth for the win.
"We had a good game plan early, but we couldn't stay with it," Thibodeaux said. "But our guys played hard through these three games and did a good job."
Nicholls will travel to Tulane for a the second game of the season vs. the Green Wave Tueday night at 6 p.m.
