THIBODAUX, La. - The Colonels opted to dress in full pads for the first time this spring, and ended practice with a mild scrimmage with the first and second teams squaring off against one another.

"You can see the players go through the motions, but you always know the season starts when you hear the sound of pads and helmets hitting against each other," said head coach Jay Thomas.

"It was good to see the competitiveness come out in our guys today and the hard work that they put in during today's practice."

The practice went a total of 20 periods with each lasting five minutes. The offense worked primarily on normal down situations working primarily on 1st and 10 and 2nd and medium. The defense also got some in on 1st and 10 situations, while also doing some tackling drills to polish the physical part of their game.

Special teams got some reps in all aspects, but primarily focused on punt and punt block. The scrimmage lasted roughly the final six periods, and the first team and second offense and defense squared off against one another.

The Colonels will bounce back tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. practice.

The annual spring game is set for Thursday April 24 at 7 p.m. in John L. Guidry Stadium. Nicholls athletic department will host Colonel Fest on Saturday April 19 in conjunction with baseball's home contest against in-state rival Northwestern State.

An official start time of Colonel Fest is still being determined, however the event will feature a band and a cooking contest. The cooking contest will feature a jambalaya division and a miscellaneous bracket. Anyone wishing to enter a team in the cook off should contact Norby Chabert at 985-493-2516.

Tickets for Colonel Fest are $10.00 and the ticket will allow for admission to football practice that day and admittance to the baseball game. All children under 13 get in free.
