COLONELS FALL IN FINAL SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE MATCHES

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Colonel men's tennis team dropped two Southland Conference matches over the weekend, falling 5-2 to Lamar on Sunday and 6-0 vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday in Beaumont.

In Sunday's match vs. Lamar, the Colonels captured the doubles point, taking two of three from the Cardinals.

At No. 1 doubles, Radu Ionescu/Vlad Popa defeated Filip Kanczula/Macig Boqusz 8-5. Eric Fisher/Phenyo Matong claimed an 8-5 No. 2 win over Diego Snyder/Allan Gomes. In the No. 3 match, Sami Mouline/Chris Hernandez fell 8-3 to Mario Janjic/David Wanja.

But the Colonels faltered in the singles matches, taking just one of the six.

Matong won the No. 4 match 6-3, 6-7 (9), 6-1 over Snyder for the only singles point of the day for Nicholls.

At No. 1, Ionescu fell 6-2, 6-1 to Kanczula, while Fisher was defeated 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 by Boqusz at No. 2. Popa dropped the No. 3 match 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3 to Janjic and Rohan Shetty fell 6-4, 6-2 to Gomes in the No. 5 match. At No. 6, Alex Gasca-Silav lost 6-3, 6-4 to Andres Medina.

On Monday, the Colonels and Islanders did not play any of the three doubles matches, but A&M-Corpus Christi swept the singles matches to claim the win.

In No. 1 singles, Ionescu fell 6-3, 7-5 to Mikhail Pavlov and Fisher was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Laurent Montoisy at No. 2. Vlad Popa dropped the No. 3 match 6-2, 7-5 to Dmitry Novikov. In the No. 4 spot, Matong fell 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 to Jaume Farras, while Shetty was defeated 6-1, 6-0 by Ian Cingel at No. 5. In the No. 6 slot, Gasca-Silav fell 6-4, 6-1 to James Langford.

The Colonels will play one remaining regular season match on Wednesday, April 16 at Alcorn State. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
