Texas-San Antonio scored at least one run in every inning but the eighth, running to a 14-7 victory over Nicholls Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The Colonels drop to 9-41 (4-22 SLC) while the Roadrunners improve to 36-14 (20-6 SLC) on the season.
Bryan Myers took the loss for Nicholls, falling to 2-5 on the year after giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits. The righty fanned three and issued two walks.
Freshman Drew Erwin was the most effective Colonel pitcher of the day, shutting down the Roadrunners in the eighth. Erwin threw one inning of one-hit ball and struck out two of the four batters he faced.
Chovanec improves to 8-3 with 7.0 innings on the mound for UTSA. The starter gave up all seven of Nicholls runs on 13 hits, while striking out five.
Nicholls took the lead briefly in the top of the fourth, but steady offensive production from the Roadrunners overpowered the Colonels.
In the fourth, Keith Kulbeth cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple to right center field and scored when the next batter, Walter Jones laid down an RBI bunt single to third.
The Colonels tried to rally in the sixth, plating three runs off the bats of Anthony Wray, who doubled to left, scoring Kulbeth and Brett Cook, and Kevin Persick, who brought Wray in with a single to left.
Kevin Persick was perfect on the day as the designated hitter for Nicholls, going 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Kulbeth went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Colonels, while Brandt Boudreaux and Walter Jones each had three hits.
The Colonels will attempt to avoid the sweep on Sunday in game three. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
