COLONELS DROP GAME ONE TO LIONS 15-1

Box Score

THIBODAUX, La. - Southeastern Louisiana scored six runs in the third inning, taking advantage of four-straigh walks and a bases-clearing double, claiming a 15-1 victory over the Colonels Thursday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

Nicholls drops to 9-43 (4-24 SLC) on the year, while the Lions improve to 28-24 (14-14 SLC) with two games left in the regular season.

The Lions had three players with three-hit games, including Cass Hargis who went 3-for-3 with six RBI and two runs scored.

"We just didn't play very well tonight," said Colonel skipper Chip Durham. "We set the tone at the beginning of the game, leaving a couple of runners in scoring position. If we had put the ball in play, the momentum of the game would have been different. But instead, we didn't take advantage of that."

Brent Varnado scattered five hits and one unearned runs through a seven inning complete game. The righty issued one walk, but struck out nine on the night, improving to 3-4 on the year.

For the Colonels, Justin Breaux falls to 2-7 with 2.2 innings of work. The lefty gave up seven runs (all earned) and walked four.

"Our pitching didn't come through - walking eight and hitting two batters - and Southeastern followed that with basehits to bring those runs in," Durham added.

Nicholls put a run on the board in the fifth as Zac Bone reached on an infield single and scored when Walter Jones drove an RBI double down the left field line.

But Varnado only allowed one baserunner through the remaining innings, walking T.J. Menerey in the Colonel half of the seventh.

Jones was the only Colonel to post a multi-hit game, leading off the game with a single to right in addition to his fifth-inning double.

"We didn't swing the bats," noted Durham. "You can't win too many ball games by scoring one run. They played a great game - came out and did very well. They outperformed us tonight."

The Lions and Colonels will square off in game two Friday at 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow the game on-line by clicking the GameTracker link at www.GeauxColonels.com.
