Box Score
ARLINGTON, Texas -
A ninth inning rally fell short for the Colonels Friday night, as Nicholls dropped game one of the series at Texas-Arlington 7-6 at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Colonels mounted a comeback in the ninth, cutting the Maverick lead to 7-6 with four runs on four hits. Anthony Wray and Shane Barksdale posted extra-basehits and came in to score, while Kevin Persick drove a pinch-hit single to right, plating T.J. Menerey.
Lefthander Ryan Robinson earned the win for Texas-Arlington, improving to 5-4 on the season after allowing four runs (three earned) off of six hits through eight innings of work. Robinson fanned five Colonel batters and issued just one walk on the night.
For Nicholls, Jake Parrish drops to 1-4 after allowing giving out five walks and one hit through two innings on the mound. Parrish was charged with three runs, all of them earned.
Nathan Quebedeaux threw 4.2 innings of one-hit, two-run baseball for the Colonels out of the bullpen.
The Mavs got on the board first, plating two in the bottom of the second. Mitch Putman and Evan Raley drew back-to-back one-out walks and came around to score when Jay Pitschka doubled to left.
Nicholls cut the lead in half with a run of its own in the third after T.J. Menerey drew a lead-off base-on-balls and advanced on a Shane Barksdale single and a balk by the UTA pitcher. With two out in the inning, Brett Cook reached base on an infield RBI single, scoring Menerey from third.
In the sixth, Keith Kulbeth doubled to right, scoring Brett Cook and bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks.
But the Mavs added insurance runs they would eventually need in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Andrewx Kainer and again in the eighth with two runs on back-to-back-to-back basehits to run the score to 7-2.
Barksdale was the only Colonel to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored on the night.
Jones, Cook and Persick all posted RBI for Nicholls. Persick was 1-for-1 on the night with his pinch-hit basehit.
The Colonels will look to even the series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
