ARLINGTON, Texas -
Nicholls used a five-run seventh inning to take a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Texas-Arlington and pick up its second-straight win.
With the victory, the Colonels improve to 9-39 (4-20 Southland Conference on the season.
After picking up a run in the fifth off a solo homerun from Kevin Persick, the Colonels plated five in the seventh, taking the lead 6-5.
Shane Barksdale led off the inning with a basehit to center and advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Anthony Wray walked and, with runners at the corners, Persick drove in his second RBI of the day with a single to left center, scoring Barksdale.
Another wild pitch advanced Wray and Persick to third and second, respectively, before T.J. Menerey drove a basehit to center that scored both runners. Menerey was sacrificed to second and scored on consecutive wild pitches from the Texas-Arlington hurler. With two out, Brett Cook singled to right, scoring Walter Jones, who had reached base on a single in the previous at bat.
Persick led the Colonels, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jones, Barksdalen and Jordy Toups all logged two hits on the day.
Menerey drove in two runs in the game, scoring one run himself.
Nicholls found itself down early, giving up two runs in the first on four-straight basehits to the first four UTA batters of the game.
The Mavericks added a run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to make it a 5-1 ballgame before the Colonels exploded offensively in the top of the seventh.
Justin Breaux improves to 2-5 on the season, picking up the win for Nicholls after throwing 2.1 innings of one-hit, one-run relief. Lance Guidroz earned the save, his first of the season, giving up just two hits in 3.0 innings on the mound.
The Colonels will take to the road next weekend, traveling to San Antonio for a three-game set with the Roadrunners. The series marks the last road games of the season for Nicholls. Friday night's first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
