SAN MARCOS, Texas - Nicholls didn't score many, but scored enough to get the 2-1 victory over Sam Houston State on Thursday afternoon in the Southland Conference Tournament at Bobcat Field.

With the win, the Colonels move on to play No. 3 Texas-San Antonio (25-24, 20-10 SLC) at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

"This was just a great win for us today. They (SHSU) swept us this season at their place, and I think the team came into the game with something to prove," said head coach Jenny Parsons.

Picking up the win in the circle was sophomore Lacey Gros as she threw 6.2 innings allowing only five hits, four walks and one run while fanning four. Gros was relieved by Ensminger in the top of the seventh and got the swinging strikeout against the only batter that she faced to end the game. Gros improved to 9-3 on the season and Ensminger picked up her second save on the year.

The Colonels (29-27, 15-14) started the scoring off in the bottom of the third when junior Danielle Clayton hit a double to right center to score senior Kat Harrell from second. Harrell singled in her at bat to power the inning.

Nicholls added one insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, and as it turned out they would need it as Sam Houston State (30-31, 15-15) rallied in the top half of the seventh to score a run, but Ensminger came in for relief with two outs and got the swinging strikeout to end the game.

In the bottom half to the sixth, junior Nicole Smith got on and made it safely to second via an error by SHSU's Tanya Hooser. Senior Rachel Pugh then came up with a big two-out RBI single to centerfield that scored Smith from second for the Colonels to take the 2-0 lead.

Leading the Colonels at the plate was Harrell with a game high 2-for-3 performance with a run scored. Registering a hit and a RBI in the win was Clayton and Pugh, while junior Kodi Butler and Smith each went 1-for-3.

The Colonels will play UTSA at 6:30 p.m. tonight. The game can be followed live statistically on the internet via GameTracker at www.geauxcolonels.com, and the game can be heard live on 640 AM KTIB locally. Joe Fakier will be providing play-by-play.
