NATCHITOCHES, La. - Nicholls got a career effort from senior Dominique Washington who poured in 25 points, but it was not enough as Northwestern State won 73-58 in Prather Coliseum on Saturday evening.

Nicholls (0-12, 0-1) had 32 turnovers in the loss that led to 37 points for Northwestern State (9-5, 1-0); however the Colonels did hold the Lady Demons to a 16.7 percent (3-for-18) mark from downtown, which is well below their season average of 36.5 percent.

Northwestern State did have four players score in double figures with Britany Kinalw leading the way with 14 off the bench. The only other Colonel besides Washington to cross the 10-point barrier was senior Christie Bryant with 15 in the loss.

The Colonels held a 12-9 advantage in the first half with 13:06 left, but the Lady Demons went on a 21-0 run to take a 30-12 lead with 5:48 left in the half. Washington, D. stopped the skid with two free throws at the 5:32 stoppage, however, Northwestern State went into halftime with a 39-22 advantage.

Leading all scorers at halftime was Northwestern State's Kinlaw with 12 points, while leading all Nicholls scorers was Washington with eight. At the half, Nicholls had 16 turnovers that led to 23 points the other way, while the Lady Demons' had nine that only accounted for four Colonel points.

Although the Colonels entered the second half trailing, Nicholls did cut the lead to 14 at the 6:29 mark via a Washington three-ball, but that is the closest they would come.

Nicholls will resume action on Wednesday Jan. 14 when they travel to Texas-San Antonio, and Northwestern State will host Southeastern La. on the same night. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
