Final Stats

THIBODAUX, La. - Both the men's and women's tennis teams picked up wins on Saturday against NAIA power Xavier with the men nabbing a 7-0 victory, while the women prevailed 5-2.

The men evened their season record to 1-1 with the win. In the victory, all but two singles matches were decided in two sets. Putting together impressive singles wins were sophomore Radu Ionescu, juniors Eric Fisher and Phenyo Matong, and senior Vlad Popa.

Ionescu defeated Xavier's No.1 Mike Green 6-1, 6-2, and Fisher also made quick work of the Gold Rush's No.3 Mikhail Vaval 6-2, 6-1. Matong fought hard to get his 6-2, 7-5 victory over No.5 Mario Myles, while Popa defeated No.4 Steffen Giles-Osborn 6-2, 6-1.

The pair's team of Matong and Fisher clinched the doubles point over Xavier with their 8-2 victory over Michael Walker and Vaval.

The women remained perfect on the season, improving to 2-0 with their 5-2 victory. Sophomore Florina Nosca had to fight back to get the No.1 singles victory over Anastesia Opata 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, while sophomore Sumana Kalyanasundram dominated in the No.4 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Colleen McArthur.

Kalyanasundram teamed with sophomore Natalia Zamora in doubles, and clinched the doubles point with their 8-2 victory over Opata and McArthur.

The men's team will pick up action at Troy on Saturday, while the women host Southern on Wednesday.
